Media and Information Literacy
What is Media and Information Literacy?
The center for Media Literacy defines MIL as: "a 21st century approach to education. It provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate, create and participate with messages in a variety of forms — from print to video to the Internet. Media literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a democracy." Why is MIL Important?
Below, I have compiled my argument for why Media-Information and Literacy skills are a necessity to teach in the classroom!
MIL Elevator Pitch
- Media-Information Literacy is closely knit with many of the principles being taught in schools.
- The National Association for Media Literacy Education says Media Literacy “empowers people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of an increasingly wide range of messages using image, language, and sound”.
- We typically think of literacy as the ability to read and write. The CCSS is expanding the definition of literacy beyond reading and writing to include “speaking, listening, use of language, and creation across mediums as central components of literacy in a digital age.”
- MIL ties into many of the common core English/Language Arts standards as literature and text now goes beyond the written word and is incorporating itself into digital media.
- Since use of technology and digital media is growing in our society, it is a central part of adolescent’s lives.
- It is important for adolescents to be able to identify credible sources for research and understand the point of view media messages are coming from, who they are being directed to, and how they are delivering the message.
- MIL builds on skills that school standards are trying to teach. It emphasizes the importance of critical thinking skills and can aide in the learning of core subject content. It encourages creativity, outside thinking, and finding different outlets for displaying understanding of content.
- When students develop their MIL skills, they are preparing for the future. As time passes, our news, advertisements, entertainment, etc. is becoming more and more digitalized. By teaching young people of today how to analyze and respond to media, we are preparing them for their lives in the workforce in the future.
