Privacy and Ethics
Edmodo Privacy
This work I worked on reading the "fine print" and examing the privacy policies of educational technology. I took a closer look when it came to Edmodo. I wanted to see if Edmodo's privacy policy was ethical. In terms of freedom of expression and privacy on Edmodo, the privacy policy explains that they “neither rent nor sell your Personal Information or Children’s Personal Information”. They explain that the only way that content is shared is if it is through a third-party, if it is in communication about Edmodo’s services, or if the user has used the software to break the law or put others at risk. Edmodo accounts are password protected and use privacy and safety mechanisms to prevent malicious scripts or unauthorized access to the account.
Regarding access to information and control, users are able to access information in the user profile, contacts, groups, preferences, and content in the account. For some services, users may delete, add, or edit information. Users may delete or update their accounts. If they are under the age of 13 in the United States and 16 in the European Union, the parent that gave consent to the account may delete or make changes to the account. If an account is deleted, the user’s personally identifying information is no longer stored.
